Course book of Statistical Mechanics

This course is designed for the undergraduate students of department physics in School of Science Education during one year and two hours in week. The aims of the course is studying of physical systems by statistical methods and that is a basic course in the field of physics, in the lectures the students will find the methods which they are too important to study microscopic and complicated systems .

For studying this lecture student need some background in Quantum mechanics and thermodynamics and mathematics, unfortunately in this school the students will study Quantum mechanics in next year. Then the teacher must teach some lectures of QM before starting Statistical Mechanics Course.

The chapters of the Statistical Mechanics course is designed in term of third part of Alonso and Finn 's book as " fundamental university physics".

Chapter 1

A Introduction To QM

This chapter is about a introduction to Quantum mechanics and the students learn an introduction to Quantum mechanics that is necessary to the other chapters. The details of the chapter is

1.Schrodinger equation

2. General Solution of Schrodinger equation

3. particle in box

4. Schrodinger equation in 3 dimensions

Chapter 2

Classical Statistical Mechanics

This chapter introduces classical Statistical Mechanics. Classical Statistical mechanics is based on Maxwell- Boltzmann distribution, and classical identical and distinguishable particles in a system. detail of the chapter is

1.Statistical equilibrium

2.The Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution law

3.partition function

4.temperature

5.Thermal equilibrium

6.Ideal gas

Chapter 3

Thermodynamics

In chapter 2 we study microscopic system and in this chapter the students meet thermodynamics and Macroscopic properties of the systems, this chapter is not new for the most of students, but that is necessary to develop of their information on thermodynamics.

The detail of the chapter is

1.Conservation of energy of a system of particles

2.Many particle System; Work

3.Many particle System Heat

4. The first law of thermodynamics

5.Graphical Representation of process

6.entropy and Second law of thermodynamics

7.entropy and heat

8.Disscussion of processes in terms of Entropy

Chapter 4

Thermal properties of Gases

In this chapter and in continuing last Chapters we study Thermal Properties of Gases with these details

1.the equation of state of an Ideal gas

2.Equation of state for real gas

3.Heat Capacity of an Ideal Monatomic Gas

4.Heat Capacities of an Ideal Polyatomic Gas

5.The Principle Of Equipartition of energy

Chapter 5

Quantum Statistical Mechanics

in this chapter we study Statistical distribution laws for Fermions and Bosons Gases , Fermions and bosons are quantum Mechanics objects and we must apply quantum mechanics methods and laws for obtaining distribution laws , before in the chapter 1 we have studied QM , then we will not have a big problem in the concepts and Methods .

Details of the chapter are

1. Fermi-Dirac Distribution law

2. The Electron gases

3. Application of Fermi-Dirac Statistics to Electron in metals

4. Bose-Einstein Distribution Law

5. The Photon Gas

6. Heat Capacity of Solids

7. The Ideal Gas in Quantum statistics

8. Comparison of the 3 statistics

Our references

The references for this course are some standard references in the world wide universities our text book, which the course is designed in term of chapters 2 and 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, is part 3 of the famous book of (Alonso and Finn) Fundamental of university physics, helping book is also the famous book of (Rief) Fundamental of Statistical Mechanics, however we can use the book of (A Guide to physics Problems) for obtaining some skills in the solving problems .

In these references the students could find some solved problems and examples which they can be typical questions for Final Examination.
